Two VERY different birds

My Mum told me an interesting story the other day. It went like this:

Did you know they did an experiment when they got a group of students to go and make noises around hummingbirds’ nests and put their faces up close to the birds in a threatening way to scare them? They then got groups of other people to walk past the same nesting sites to see what would happen. The hummingbirds didn’t react to the strangers but when the noisy students walked past, even though they didn’t behave in a threatening manner or approach the birds directly this time, the hummingbirds got agitated and flew at them. It was said that their reactions prove that they recognise individual people.

We then talked about how interesting the experiment was and how clever the little hummingbirds were. It felt like a familiar story but I was sure I hadn’t heard it before, until I remembered my sister announcing this in the car several days before:

“If you kick a crow and it sees you four years later it would s**t on your head because they recognise faces”.

Almost the same story, slightly different telling.

A very pointed telling, the latter. Love it!
