Mean Cake Lady

I have recently dragged Ben around a few wedding fairs in search of the perfect things for my our wedding. All going well, it is hopefully the one and only wedding day that I will get and for that reason I we feel that it is only right to have rainbow cake. So I approached mean cake lady (you can probably tell from her name where this is going) with her abundant flowery, sugary, pastely cakes and asked if she makes rainbow cakes. A reasonable question, I thought, for someone who bakes cakes for a living.

This is what happened:

Me: Are you able to make rainbow sponge?

Mean Cake Lady: Wrinkles nose and says “yes, but a lot of your guests probably won’t like that, what with the colouring. I mean, they definitely won’t give it to their children”

Me (trying not to point out the obvious – who doesn’t like rainbow cake?!): hmmmm I really want rainbow sponge though so maybe I would just do it on the one layer, the bottom one so it looks good when we cut into it?”

Mean Cake Lady: Well yes but then the most part of your cake would be rainbow, maybe just do the small top layer so people could have other kinds of cake and just have the rainbow cake for show.

Me: I want to cut into it though. Hypothetically how much would it cost to do a rainbow sponge?

Mean Cake Lady: Well it depends on what you would like on the outside, I like to focus much more on that than the inside of the cake”

Good to know. I think I’ll go with someone who doesn’t see me wanting rainbow cake as a secret plan to poison all of my guests.
